- DAL Segments: Classic versus CompetitiveIn Classic versus CompetitionJanuary 18, 2022DAL 6 Update To All DAL Participants (emailed on 1/14/22) Silhouette Selections Also, for the most positive DAL experience, considering the 60 day knitting time, the coaches and I feel that for those of you who are planning to design garments, the silhouettes will include pullovers and cardigans with either the Classic or Double Tapered shaping. Your neckline selection can be either a round or V neck. We feel that selecting these categories will provide the best of both worlds. They will allow for DAL participants to create a very broad range of designs that can be completed in a reasonable amount of time. To help everyone through planning their designs, I will be teaching classes to cover both garment silhouettes and the two necklines. I will also teach planning a tapered sleeve with a set-in cap. These classes have been added as bonuses for the DAL participants to give you the necessary planning tools. You will all get a chance to put your design knowledge immediately to work, and your coaches will be there to guide and support you. Yarn Selections Remember, for those of you who are following the Classic DAL model, you can select any yarn. However, for those in the competition segment, you will have to select a yarn from one of the official DAL yarn groups. Each yarn company will supply yarn in a different weight that will correspond with the 3 categories. For Lace, the yarn will be in a Sport weight (2 - Fine), For Color, the yarn will be a DK weight (3 - Light), For Cables, the yarn will be a Worsted Weight (4 - Medium). We will give more details on the DAL yarn over the next week as we prepare to receive your submissions. We are all looking forward to a fun-filled, amazingly creative, action-packed DAL.
- Stitch PatternsIn Getting StartedJanuary 17, 2022Ellen is correct that in the past we have taken the patterns and either used them "as-is" or modified them. Sometimes we have been required to use 2 stitch patterns in combination. I believe I recall Shirley saying that an inspiration stitch should be used in the design at least once. From that I am taking it that one motif or a reference that is recognizable should be used. If you look at Mari's "Linden Hoodie" you will see that she used one motif of a pattern, and then modified it to be both a vertical inset and a hem. In other Duets patterns, you will see other modifications. I think it would be very cool if you were able to come up with a completely new stitch pattern that referenced the inspiration stitch and then became something new, but I don't think anyone expects that you create your own stitch pattern. One of the things that I find most helpful in these DALs is that they force us to focus on a limited selection of stitches. Frequently for me there are far too many choices available, and I cannot pick one to get started. One stitch dictionary will have hundreds of stitches, and yarn is available in so many weights and fibers. It can be very overwhelming and easy to just spin your wheels and never get anything done. Shirley is forcing us to learn to focus and be very editorial in our choices. Frequently, the key to meeting deadlines is to make decisions and move forward.3

- Submission Form & Stitch Pattern UpdateIn Getting Started·January 11, 2022Can't see this message? View in a browser DAL 6 Update The format of the DALs has been that we first post the Inspiration garments where the stitch patterns that will be included in the DAL are shown on garments that have been featured in various magazines. Here, as in the last DAL, Included in that first Inspiration post are a few photos of swatches from reputable Stitch Dictionaries that I have not used on published designs, but would like to include in the DAL offerings. That is what has been posted today on the website in Lace, Color, and Cables examples. I have also posted a few swatch photos for the previously featured garments. Hopefully, you will be inspired by what you are seeing and will be helped to think about the pattern(s) that will bring your design idea to life as you prepare to profile and sketch it. Next, I will post the charts. The Submission Form is in both English and Japanese. It cannot be submitted until all the information fields have been completed. As you are filling out the form, if you have to stop, you can save the partially completed document and return to it later. You can do that as many times as necessary. When it is complete “submit” will appear. You can then click on that “submit” tab to upload the form. It can then be printed or saved as a PDF. Shirley05273

- DAL Segments: Classic versus CompetitiveIn Classic versus CompetitionJanuary 18, 2022Thanks for these details. Could we get a little clarification as to what "You cannot share any visuals of the design outside the DAL during the contest." (for the competition DAL) means? I am interpreting it to mean that I could post a picture of my sketch or swatch or work in progress here on the shirleypaden.com members forum, but NOT in Ravelry (because anyone can look at it there). Is that correct? Thank you! I'm already deep into swatching and watching my stitch pattern morph into new ideas!04

- Welcome! In Getting StartedJanuary 12, 2022Diane, now that we have access to the kick-off videos, I re-watched Friday’s, trying my best to speed up past the Japanese interpretation, and noticed we also have access to Saturday’s. That’s a good thing because Saturday’s has information, in the form of answered questions, that I don’t believe was clear on Friday’s. I will need to watch it again, as I falling asleep as I listened, but thought you would want to know.2
